As we celebrate National Apprenticeship Week 2025 and the 200th anniversary of the railway, we're excited to share Tracey Keeling's inspiring journey at Hitachi Rail. Tracey, a Rail and Rail Systems Systems Principal Engineer Level 6 apprentice, has made significant strides in her role, showcasing her dedication and passion for the rail industry.

My passion for engineering and the opportunity to be part of a transformative industry inspired me to pursue this apprenticeship. The rail sector is evolving rapidly, and being part of this change, especially during the 200th anniversary of the railway, is incredibly exciting. The apprenticeship has provided me with comprehensive training, mentorship, and opportunities for career advancement. Hitachi Rail encourages continuous learning and professional development, which has been instrumental in my growth.

Learning and Growing

Throughout my apprenticeship, I've had the chance to work on various projects and tasks that have enhanced my skills and knowledge. Managing the Change & Configuration inbox, facilitating third-party contracts, and liaising with both internal and external stakeholders have been crucial in developing my coordination and communication skills. Handling daily trackers for key projects and creating and uploading project change packs, have honed my project management abilities.

Quality Control and Data Management

Quality control and data management are at the heart of my role. Reviewing change proposals, updating the Change & Configuration tracker, and maintaining software baseline documents and serialized parts lists have been vital in ensuring data accuracy and quality control. These tasks have taught me the importance of attention to detail and maintaining high standards in all aspects of my work.

Support and Continuous Improvement

Providing essential support and facilitation to the Change & Configuration team has been a significant part of my apprenticeship. Managing customer comments, participating in meetings, and handling various requests from the team have helped me develop a proactive and supportive approach. Engaging in daily housekeeping, raising SAP notifications, and updating SAP records have contributed to continuous process improvement, ensuring that the team's operations are streamlined and effective.

Memorable Moments and Achievements

One of my most memorable moments was receiving an exceptional first in one of my very first university reports. Balancing work and study is no easy feat, and achieving such a result made the experience even more rewarding. My favourite part of working in the rail industry is being part of a legacy that has shaped modern UK transportation. Celebrating 200 years of railway history adds a sense of pride and accomplishment to my work. I'm proud to be part of a pioneering company like Hitachi Rail, contributing to the future of rail transport.
