Making Meaningful Contributions to the Transportation Industry
Throughout my professional journey, I have aspired to make meaningful contributions to the transportation sector while advocating for diversity, equity, and inclusion within the industry.
Working in the Light Rail Transit (LRT) industry allows me to combine my passion for transportation with my commitment to fostering a more inclusive and equitable workplace. In my role, I have the opportunity to contribute to developing and operating public transportation systems that serve diverse communities, improving accessibility and mobility for all.
Furthermore, my position allows me to serve as a role model and mentor for other aspiring professionals, particularly individuals from underrepresented backgrounds. By sharing my experiences and expertise, I hope to inspire the next generation of black women and men to pursue careers in transportation and contribute their unique perspectives to the industry.
While there may have been challenges along the way, such as breaking through barriers and overcoming stereotypes, I am proud of my progress in achieving my career goals. My current role not only allows me to fulfil my professional aspirations but also enables me to positively impact my community and pave the way for future generations of black professionals in the LRT industry.
Revolutionising Transportation Whilst Minimising Carbon Emissions
Reducing our carbon footprint has become a paramount concern in today's world. Therefore, my proudest professional accomplishment, particularly at Hitachi Rail, revolves around a ground-breaking project to revolutionise transportation across the Mississauga, Brampton, and GTA border whilst significantly minimising carbon emissions.
In this project, I have played a pivotal role in collaborating with diverse stakeholders and forging strategic partnerships to ensure the success of the LRT initiative. Through effective communication and proactive problem-solving, we have navigated challenges and kept the project on track while remaining responsive to the evolving needs of our clients and communities.

Finding Diversity of Thought in the Transportation Industry
As a person of colour entering the transportation industry or corporate America, it's crucial to understand the value of your unique perspective. Diversity of thought and experience is significant for innovation and problem-solving in these fields. Seek mentors and allies who can guide and support you as you navigate your career path. Don't be afraid to advocate for yourself and your ideas; be prepared to work hard to prove your worth. Continuous learning and skill development are crucial to staying competitive, so invest in opportunities for growth and development whenever possible. Remember that your contributions are valuable and deserve recognition, and don't be discouraged by setbacks or obstacles.
Cultural Influence on Career
My culture and heritage influence every aspect of my approach to work. As a black woman in the transportation industry, I bring a unique perspective shaped by my experiences and the experiences of those who came before me. I value community, collaboration, and resilience, deeply rooted in my cultural background. My heritage also instils a strong sense of purpose and determination to succeed despite challenges or obstacles. I am motivated by the desire to create opportunities for others who may face similar barriers in the workplace, and I strive to lead by example, demonstrating the importance of hard work, integrity, and perseverance in achieving success.
Finding Strength and Guidance from Black Leaders
One black leader and pioneer whom I greatly respect is Rosa Parks. Her courage and determination in refusing to give up her seat on a segregated bus sparked a pivotal moment in the civil rights movement. Rosa Parks' act of defiance challenged unjust laws and inspired countless others to stand up against racial discrimination and injustice. Her quiet strength and unwavering commitment to justice are a powerful reminder of the power of individual actions to effect meaningful change. Rosa Parks' legacy inspires me to stand up for what is right, even in the face of adversity, and to use my voice and influence to create positive change in the world.
Importance of Celebrating Black History
Black History Month holds deep significance for me as a time to celebrate black people's achievements, contributions, and resilience throughout history. It's a time to honour the trailblazers who paved the way for future generations and reflect on our community's progress. It's also a time to acknowledge the ongoing struggles and challenges that Black individuals face and recommit ourselves to the fight for equality and justice for all. Black History Month reminds us of the power of our collective history and the importance of recognizing and celebrating the diversity of Black experiences and perspectives.
Black history is not just a month; it's a journey of resilience, triumph, and perseverance that spans generations. It's about recognizing the often-overlooked contributions of black individuals in shaping the world we live in today. It's about amplifying black voices, stories, and experiences that have been marginalized or silenced.
