With the 2024 Paris Olympics over, there’s another golden opportunity on the horizon — transforming South East Queensland’s rail network for the 2032 Olympics in Brisbane, Australia.

Olivia Chen, Associate Automation Engineer at Hitachi Rail in Australia, embodies the spirit of winning through her dynamic career shift from a primary school teacher to a professional in rail technology. Her journey reflects not just a personal triumph, but a broader vision for future transport innovation. Olivia shares her story.

My passion for tech won through

Before joining Hitachi Rail, I spent two years teaching English and Science. However, my fascination with technology began long before my teaching days. As a child, I was captivated not just by playing mobile and computer games but by exploring how the technology behind them worked. I also vlogged my holiday travels and created videos to share my travel tips, which further fuelled my appetite for technology.

My deep interest in technology and problem-solving led me to study e-commerce and software development, setting the stage for my career shift.

Growing up in Beijing, I experienced firsthand how integral advanced rail systems are in daily life. This early exposure fuelled my desire to contribute to similar advancements here in Australia. Joining Hitachi Rail in July 2023 has allowed me to merge my passion for technology with a role that is crucial to rail transformation.

At Hitachi Rail, my role involves performing functional and performance testing, maintaining test environments, and collaborating with developers to enhance software reliability.  I’m currently involved in the development and implementation of the new Traffic Management System for Queensland Rail as part of the roll-out of ETCS L2 on the South East Queensland rail network.

Building the future of rail

Working on the ETCS L2 project is profoundly meaningful to me. It’s not just about integrating new technology; it’s about improving safety, efficiency, and sustainability in public transport. The opportunity to contribute to a project that will enhance the commuting experience for the 2032 Olympics and beyond is incredibly exciting.

I draw on my teaching background in my current role. Just like a teacher assesses and helps students improve and achieve their best outcomes, I test and refine systems to ensure they perform optimally. Both roles are about observation, evaluation, making improvements and achieving results.

I’m optimistic about the future of rail transport in Australia. With increasing population growth and urbanisation, trains will play an ever-increasing role in public and multi-modal transport. Efficient rail networks will enhance connectivity and offer eco-friendly travel options.

As I continue to work on the development of Brisbane and South East Queensland’s rail network, my transition from teacher to tech innovator feels like a perfect alignment of my skills and passions. I’m thrilled to be part of this exciting journey and look forward to contributing to the golden future of rail transport.
